“What was your reaction when you were selected to compete at Photo Talent Academy? ”
When I heard the news, I was very happy to be selected and immediately very excited to start filming the remission, because I found the project very interesting. My first reaction was to call my family and friends to tell them the news. They were happy for me.
“How did you experience this competition? ”
First of all, I loved participating in this competition because I had the opportunity to show my work to more people, but also because I was able to go behind the scenes of a TV shoot. I met wonderful people, a very pleasant and professional film crew, candidates with whom I got along well, but also very talented photographic coaches. What I found most interesting was the working method of each of the three coaches that we had and this confirmed to me that it is always good to leave a great deal of improvisation during a photo shoot.
“Have you ever participated in a Photo magazine contest? ”
Indeed, I have already participated in the Biggest Competition in the World organized each year by Photo magazine, and I was lucky to have been selected several times. The last publication fills the double opening page of the fashion category of Photo magazine (N. 529) with my photo Rose Flamingo. The magazine has always been present in my life since adolescence. I regularly received new numbers by mail. This magazine is a pillar and a reference in the artistic field and I hope that it still has many bright days ahead of it.
"What is your background ?"
I come from Cannes and I have always wanted to evolve in the artistic world. I have always liked to create and express my ideas through different media. With the family camera, I made videos with my big sister and teenager I bought my first pro camera. I took photos of my friends and it was by carrying out small projects that I perfected myself by evolving more and more in fashion, where I learned to master my camera and the editing software that occupy a large place in my way of working. I followed a classic school path and I never went to photo school: I am entirely self-taught.
“Have you ever assisted photographers?”
I have never assisted photographers until now, but it is an experience that I would gladly do to learn more about each other's way of working.
“What is your point of view on the profession of photographer?”
I think that the profession has somehow democratized, because we all have access to increasingly efficient equipment. With the Photo Talent Academy show alone, we have proven that taking fashion photos is within everyone's reach because we shoot with a smartphone. Moreover, I think that what makes the difference between a professional and an amateur, it is no longer the tools used, but the imagination, the desire to create and the passion. The medium I want to use more is video. A photographer must know how to master photography as well as video.
“What material do you work with? In a photo, what is your favorite moment? ”
I mainly work in Canon, I have a 5D Mark III and a whole bunch of lenses and accessories. When I have to do a photo shoot, I always make a mood board beforehand to bring together different inspirations, hairstyles, make-up and moods. I first apply all the ideas I have prepared, then secondly I let my imagination run free, I soak up the moment. I can be very demanding and I am ready to repeat as many times as necessary until I get the desired shot. I edit my photos myself and it's one of my favorite moments, because I see the end of the work.
“On the show you shot with a smartphone, the Huawei P10. Did that change your look? ”
When I learned that the contest photoshoots had to be done with a smartphone, I got scared! I rarely use the camera function of my smartphone, except to capture a moment with my friends or my family. During the trials, shooting with the Huawei camera was an additional stress, as we were limited to the focal length of the phone. The grip is different from what I usually use and just the fact of not having my eye in a viewfinder disturbed me enough. But I found myself finally ignoring these details, the adrenaline allowed me to go beyond and take pictures that suited me. It must be said that it was a smartphone designed to take photographs!
“Which brands would you dream of collaborating with?”
I would dream of collaborating with many ready-to-wear brands but also in haute couture. I really like the style of Balmain, Saint Laurent, Dior, Chanel or Prada.
“Do you see social networks as competition multipliers or as visibility platforms?”
I see social networks as a visibility platform for my work and I regularly post new things. I very often receive professional requests via the various social networks. I think having a Facebook or an Instagram is essential.
“Do you have a Facebook account? Pinterest? ”
Indeed, I have an Instagram account and a Facebook account. Usually, I post the same things: 80% work and 20% private life. I appreciate having feedback and making my work known: these two platforms are ideal for that. I also have my site, jeremyjakubowicz.com: I post all my shootings there and I archive my work.
“As a photographer how do you define yourself?”
I would say that I am a minimalist style fashion photographer and I am a fan of tone on tone. I love the solitude of my models in settings that I select and I use glowy makeup whenever possible. I think it has become one of my artistic signatures.
“What is your best photographer's anecdote? And the worst? ”
Anecdotes, I have the hood full. The worst anecdote concerns the Rose Flamingo photo that I took with the magnificent model Maryon Thaïs Eglenne. I used a standing softbox to unblock the shadows and when we finished our shoot, a gust of wind hit and my softbox fell on its head. She left with three stitches!
“If I give you € 20,000 for a subject. what would you do with it? ”
I've wanted to do a fashion shoot in the desert for a very long time. I can perfectly imagine a large metal trailer, manned by supermodels and bearded, chubby men barbecuing in the middle of nowhere, where the desert heat is felt on their glistening skins. With 20,000 euros I would go to the desert.
“And if I gave you € 20,000 to buy prints, who would you get?”
There are many prints that I would like to treat myself to, but the works of photographer Jacques Olivar are the ones that make me travel the most.
